Paragon Backup and Restore WinPE Boot Disk

This boot disk will give you the ability to boot to a disk and work with an operating system that will not boot. It has partitioning tools and a wizard to move a Windows installation to different hardware.

Necessary Software

To create a bootable disk that will run a full installation of Paragon Backup and Recovery with all of it's tools you first need to download and install the WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit).

WAIK is Microsoft’s proprietary tool and can be obtained from its Download Center for free. Please note that you need a genuine Windows installation to be able to download this tool.

Then you will need to install the Paragon BMB (Boot Media Builder). This application is part of the purchase of Paragon software and requires a registration and license code.

It may be helpful to download the BMB Quick Start Guide here.

Disk Creation

Before you launch Boot Media Builder please make sure you’ve got either Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) or OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) installed in your system. Otherwise, you won’t be able to accomplish the operation.

Launch the Paragon Boot Media Builder:

Start → Programs → Paragon Software → Boot Media Builder

  1. The welcome page introduces the wizard’s functionality.
  2. Please click Next.
  3. Select USB Flash.
  4. Choose to create an ISO image that can be burned to CD/DVD
  5. Select “Create a new bootable media”

The BMB will then detect your installation of WAIK or OEM Preinstallation Kit in their default location and if not has a button to download it. The process will not continue unless one is installed.

The next couple steps are to inject drivers for storage or NIC and setup connecting to a network and mapping network drives.

For a generic disk choose:

  • No network support
  • Do not mount a backup storage
  • Skip the adding of NIC drivers

It will take a few minutes to create the ISO. You can then burn to CD/DVD and boot a non booting PC to manage the hard drive/backups etc.
