Ahsay Disaster Recovery

Windows Bare Metal (DR) Backup

Create the Image Backup

http://www.ahsay.com/jsp/en/home/index.jsp?pageContentKey=ahsay_products_windows-system_benefits

  1. Create a new backup set
  2. Choose MS Windows System Backup
  3. Verify Include all critical volumes is selected
  4. Choose a relaxed backup schedule for DR backups:
    • One time (run after significant system changes)
    • Monthly would be reasonable
    • Weekly would be the most frequent you would want
  5. Adjust the temporary storage location:
    • Local, USB or network location
    • Must be a non-critical volume
  6. Choose on-line, Local Copy or both

Best Variation for Fast, Local Disaster Recovery

When you create the MS Windows System Backup set, you might:

  • Choose not to configure a Local Copy
  • Set the temporary directory to be a local, USB or network volume
  • The temp directory must be a non-critical volume
  • It's best to use a fast local volume
  • No encryption
  • No compression
  • Disable In-File Delta
  • De-select Remove temporary files after backup

Then, after backing up the image backup to the Ahsay server, you are left with the necessary files to perform the restore from the left-over temp files.

  • Acts like a Local Copy, but less secure (unencrypted)
  • You can skip the Ahsay part of the restore operation and just boot from the Windows media
  • Consider enabling Microsoft's BitLocker on the dedicated temporary volume for security

Restore the Image Backup

  1. Using the Ahsay web interface, restore the image backup to an external hard drive
    • Or just use the temporary files as discussed above
  2. Connect the external hard drive top the machine to be restored
  3. Boot the machine from the Windows installation media
  4. Choose Repair
  5. Choose Image Restore
