It seems many users don't appreciate the new default image viewer in Windows 10…and they keep asking us how to change it back to the old Windows Photo Viewer.

We put together a simple method to 'activate' the old Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10. Just download or create the photo_viewer.reg file, then double-click on it to enter it into your PC's registry. Admin privileges are required, so if you don't have permissions, please contact your sysadmin.

You will also need to confirm Windows Photo Viewer upon first use.

Here is a zip file containing the photo_viewer.reg file, plus a couple of sample images for testing.

This .reg file will set the old Windows Photo Viewer as the default app for the following file types and will also make it available to set as the default for other file types as well.

• .jpg
• .png
• .bmp
