Install Network Printers Automatically at Login using Group Policy

Install Shared Printer on Server 2012 R2

  1. Add printer to server and confirm printing.
  2. Right click and select Printer Properties → Sharing tab
    1. Share this printer
    2. List in directory
    3. De-select Render print jobs on client computers (mainly for RDS)
    4. Edit Share name (name displayed to users) if desired
  3. Click OK

Set GPO to Install Printers at Login

:!: You can also create a new Group Policy Object if you prefer.

  1. Print Management → Print Servers → <Server Name> → Printers
  2. Right click desired printer → Deploy with Group Policy
  3. Browse for and select a GPO (or click Create New Group Policy Object)
  4. Deploy per user and or per machine
  5. Click Add, OK, OK
  6. Repeat for each printer you want to install

Troubleshooting

When installing drivers for multiple architectures on a Windows Server, verify that the additional drivers are:

  • Same exact version
  • Same exact name
