====== Shared Network Scanner on Ubuntu ======

===== Installation =====

sudo apt-get install sane-utils
</file>

As root run:

<file>
scanimage -L
</file>

Add the 'saned' user to the 'scanner' group:

:!: This may not needed (already done by the package installer) on newer versions of Linux

if ! id saned; then groupadd saned; useradd -g saned -G scanner -s /bin/false -d /dev/null saned; fi
</file>

Add your non-root user to the scanner group with the command:

usermod -a -G username scanner
</file>

After the above procedure, you can now run scanimage -L as 'username'.

<file>
scanimage -L
</file>

On Ubuntu Karmic I had to edit the permissions and reboot:

gksudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules

# libusb device nodes
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", MODE="0666"
</file>

===== Configuration =====

Edit saned.conf:

gksudo gedit /etc/sane.d/saned.conf
</file>

Add:

<file>
localhost
192.168.2.0/24
</file>

Verify the entry in /etc/services:

grep sane-port /etc/services

sane-port       6566/tcp        sane saned      # SANE network scanner daemon
</file>

Create the following file:

<file>
gksudo gedit /etc/xinetd.d/saned

# default: off
# description: The sane server accepts requests
# for network access to a local scanner via the
# network.
service sane-port
{
  port        = 6566
  socket_type = stream
  wait        = no
  user        = saned
  group       = scanner
  server      = /usr/sbin/saned
}
</file>

Restart xinetd:

<file>
sudo /etc/init.d/xinetd restart
</file>

Verify the system is listening on port 6566:

<file>
netstat -tap
</file>

===== Network Clients =====

<file>
gksudo gedit /etc/sane.d/net.conf
</file>

Add hostname of scanner server.

===== Troubleshooting =====

Kill xinetd and restart manually in debug mode:

sudo xinetd -d

scanimage -d net:localhost:test -T
</file>
