:!: VPN Connections can be quite useful for remote control or small file access.  However, limited bandwidth makes it less effective for data transfer volumes commonly seen on a LAN.

:!: For IP routing to work the IP address of the network you are connecting from must be different than the network you are connecting to.  If they are the same the connection will complete but data will not transfer.  

====== Windows 7 ======

  * Control Panel -> ''Network and Sharing Center'' 
  * Click ''Setup a New Connection or Network''
  * ''Connect to a Workplace'' -> Next
  * Leave at ''No create a new connection'' -> Next if asked
  * Click ''Use my Internet connection''
  * ''Internet Address'' is hostname or IP address of L2TP server given to you by your administrator
  * ''Destination Name'' is your label for the connection
  * Check ''Don't connect now just set it up so I can connect later'' -> Next
  * Type in the username and password given to you by your administrator check ''Save'' if desired -> Create -> Close
  * Click ''Change Adapter Settings''
  * Right Click the adapter you just created -> Properties
  * On Security tab Type of VPN select ''Layer 2...''
  * Uncheck ''Challenge Handshake Authentication...'' -> Advanced
  * Check ''Use preshared key'' and enter the Secret given to you by your administrator -> OK
  * You can click ''Connect'' from here

:!: It is important that you disconnect as soon as you are done using the VPN.  All Internet traffic will go through the VPN until you disconnect.

  * Click the Network icon in the System Tray
  * Click the L2TP connection you created
  * Click ''Connect'' enter login and password from administrator if challenged

====== Browse a network share ======

:!: Typically NetBIOS (name resolution) does not work over a VPN.  You must know the IP address of the machine you are trying to access.

  * In the ''Run'' field type \\(ip address of machine) e.g. \\192.168.1.2
  * Enter credentials when prompted save if desired
  * The resulting window will show shared resources
  * Double click to open shares
  * You can right click a share and select ''Map network drive...'' to assign a drive letter
