Often in Linux, you must be ''root'' or be a member of the ''dialout'' user group to access serial ports as needed below.
Add a user to the ''dialout'' user group, then **log out and back in** to gain the new privileges:
sudo usermod -a -G dialout $USER
or
sudo usermod -a -G dialout
